Norman Mailer‘s 1973 biography of Marilyn Monroe (usually designated Marilyn: A Biography)[a]was a large-format book of glamor photographs of Monroe for which Mailer supplied the text. Originally hired to write an introduction by Lawrence Schiller, who put the book package together, Mailer expanded the introduction into a long essay.

The book was particularly controversial. The book’s final chapter states that Monroe was murdered by agents of the FBI and CIA who resented her supposed affair with Robert F. Kennedy. In his own 1987 autobiography Timebends, the playwright Arthur Miller, a former husband to Monroe, wrote scathingly of Mailer: "[Mailer] was himself in drag, acting out his own Hollywood fantasies of fame and sex unlimited and power."

Contents

Sources[edit]

Mailer used the biographies Marilyn Monroe (Maurice Zolotow, 1960), Marilyn: an untold story (Norman Rosten, 1967) and – Norma Jean: the life of Marilyn Monroe (Fred Lawrence Guiles, 1969) as sources.

Reception[edit]

Critical reception was mixed. While the photographs were praised, critics gave Mailer’s text a critical drubbing, particularly his then-novel assertion that government agents murdered Monroe, an assertion later became a staple of many subsequent Monroe biographies.

In a 60 Minutes interview broadcast on 13 July 1973, Mailer asked his interlocutor Mike Wallace if he gave his thesis about Monroe’s "murder" any credence. Wallace said he did not. Mailer admitted to Wallace that he wrote the book for money and that the Kennedy murder scenario made the book more salable.

The book was also enormously successful, selling more copies than any of his works except The Naked and the Dead. It remained in print for decades, but was out of print in the United States as of 2011.[1]

Two later works that Mailer co-wrote presented imagined words and thoughts in Monroe’s voice: the 1980 book Of Women and Their Eleganceand the 1986 play Strawhead, which was produced off Broadway starring his daughter Kate Mailer.

Notes[edit]

  1. ^ The book is commonly referenced as Marilyn: A Biography, e.g. in Michael Lennon’s Critical essays … and an Oxford reference book. But that is a dubitable title. The display type on the title page begins with "Marilyn" on the top line, "a biography by" on another, and "Norman" and "Mailer" on two more.

THE TRANS_PACIFIC TRADE DEAL: Trump ditched the TPP. Now it’s going into effect without the US – CNNPolitics

New York (from CNN) Finally, a major 11-country agreement goes into effect Sunday, reshaping trade rules among economic powerhouses like Japan, Canada, Mexico and Australia — but the United States won’t be a part of it.

That means that Welch’s grape juice, Tyson’s pork and California almonds will remain subject to tariffs in Japan, for example, while competitors’ products from countries participating in the new Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership will eventually be duty-free.
Japan will offer similar tariff relief to the European Union, in a separate trade deal set to go into effect on February 1.
"Our competitors in Australia and Canada will now benefit from those provisions, as US farmers watch helplessly," said US Wheat Associates President Vince Peterson at a hearing on the potential negotiations with Japan.

It’s the opposite of what the Obama administration planned when it began negotiating the Trans-Pacific Partnership, known as TPP. The proposed deal, which never passed Congress, formed the backbone of the US strategy to counter Chinese economic influence, but it was one of the first things President Donald Trump moved to undo when he took office, pulling the United States out of the deal in January of 2017.
Instead, he’s pursued a series of direct bilateral agreements, launching a trade war with escalating tariffs on $250 billion in Chinese goods to force Beijing to the negotiating table. The strategy has led to a new round of talks between Trump and his counterpart Xi Jinping — but leaves US producers out of broader regional arrangements with other Pacific Rim nations, for now.
The current signatories have left open the possibility that the United States and other countries — including China — could join in the future if they agreed to the terms.
"They’re trying to say, ‘We’re moving forward and we hope you come to your senses at some point and join us, too’," said Phil Levy, a senior fellow at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs who served as a senior economist for trade under President George W. Bush.
Withdrawing from the TPP fulfilled a campaign pledge for Trump, who had called the agreement a "disaster" and argued that it would harm American workers and manufacturing.
He’s also renegotiated the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement, replacing it with a successor deal, the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which still needs congressional approval before it can take effect. And the Trump administration is currently pursuing bilateral accords with the European Union as well as with Japan.
The stakes will be even higher now that the Trans-Pacific deal is going into effect — especially for American farmers who were eager to take advantage of more open markets abroad.
Tariffs will be phased out over a 15-year period under the CPTPP.
Tyson Foods and Welch’s have both complained to the US Trade Representative’s Office about how their products will be at a significant disadvantage around the world if no action is taken.
But amid rising concerns over intellectual property protection and cybercrime, the most important element of the CPTPP may be its new rules for digital trade. Some of which were included in Trump’s renegotiated North America Free Trade Agreement, but won’t apply to US trade beyond Mexico and Canada for now.

Creating a variety of standards through a number of bilateral and trilateral trade deals could wind up hurting small and mid-sized American companies that may find it costly to keep up with the differences.
"The TPP was meant to create harmonization," Levy said. "If you’re a small guy, that helps you immensely." source:

FIGHT PASSIVITY WITH Essential OILS:

However, the sad or angry feelings that hide beneath the calm and easygoing exterior of the passive personality do not dissolve. Rather, the passive person suppresses them, and suppressed feelings rise again in the future — this time as resentment. Eventually, the once passive person now transforms into someone who exhibits passive-aggressive behavior.

Passive individuals can end up with anger that rears its ugly head unexpectedly when resentment builds too high and something has to give. Passivity can cause frustration, stress, tension, feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, loneliness, anger, and depression.

If you believe your passivity is contributing to negative feelings about yourself or others, it’s best to research ways to become more assertive and begin practicing them regularly. Ignoring resentment and anger are futile attempts to make them go away!

Essential oils for passivity can help you overcome passivity and encourage you to be more assertive and confident.*

Civic Engagement Civil Society, and Philanthropy in the USA, Romania, And Mexico, is about anti-globalization movements: the bright and dark sides of globalization, interoperability of Blockchain and Clean Elections in the United States of America, Romania, and Mexico.
People with commonalities demanding Clean Elections; no money packs, like in the U.S., civic agents who are networking across nations to change the corrupt systems currently in operation.

The Introduction to this book is about the role of civic attitudes, society in Romania, and the United States, especially on how to fight legally against dictatorships via robust civic engagement, and the counterweight of civil society. Civil society is government agency.
The strongest civic attitudes are prevalent in the United States, where movements like United State of Women, Women’s March of CA, California NOW, #CAclean.org, #metoo and #Occupy which had started in 2015 as a result of the double dip depression.

Our Foundation people think that public officials should be accountable to voters instead of to big money contributors. Activists are taking action to remedy this situation by offering clean solutions across the country by putting their lives at risk, and so do investigative journalists around the world.
The solution is Fair Elections funding of campaigns for qualified candidates who agree to strict spending limits. We will end pay-to-play politics as of December 2018.

The Anti-Trump movement has grown strong, with over 1 million women showing up at the Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. protesting the upcoming ban on Roe Vs Wade. Equal Pay for Women California is also coming up strong in California. Professional women across America are mobilizing by exposing dirty practices by companies like Google, Facebook, and Instagram.

The Romanian test case is explained in Chapter 2, where Dr Lazin is exposing the new nomenclature which is imposing the nationalistic model, by opposing civic engagement and jailing dissidents.
This theme is taken up by the author in the Biography, where agency and civic society are counteracting effectively the statist nationalism of the Social Democratic party, actually a socialist popular party masquerading as a democratic party.

This Book is about how to build a strong civic polity. In three major countries. How to beat statism and legally arrest dictators; how to keep foundations transparent and how to make a profit for the foundations, to earn interest and further the main objectives set by NGOs and Foundations. Civic entities can and should make money to protect against Koch brothers’ types around the world. How Mexican civic actors fight Presidential corruption. How Dragnea of Romania and his PSD party face loads of corruption charges together with the criminal Securitate officers embedded in the higher echelons of the society.
Checks and Balances are not enough, investigation of government corruption by non-profit foundations.

Chapter six takes up Mexico as a case study, since 1985.
Pena Nieto, Mexican outgoing President in 2018,
has opposed investigations of his government’s corruption by independent Non-Profit organizations.
The need for transparency of expenditures is absolutely paramount in this type of operations by NPPOs (not-For -Private -Profit) organizations and Foundations.
The TEO legislation is laid out and the blueprint between U.S.-Mexico is working, and herein explained for other countries to follow.
The Romanian Minister of Finances, in 2015, has not approved this blueprint, because they are only interested in extracting money from the taxpayers, and in weakening civic polity.
The communist mentality is still there entrenched in the minds of the technocrats, and bureaucrats; they are not interested in fostering civic engagement or civil society, to the contrary, Securitate officers are still running the show, together with incompetent and corrupt Congressman and parliamentarian PSD dominated (one party system, the communists regrouped in), AKA the Social Democrats Party, Securitate (ex-security, compromised officers.)

Mexico has finally embarked on a new path for change, as the new elected admin is eradicating the corrupt government employees, cutting down their salaries, perks and focusing on eliminating the drug kingpins from power and Police.
A new dawn seems to be emerging for Mexico with the election of a third party. It is the new presidential and Congressional power.
Is it going to be a government-funded elimination of corrupt Congressmen, and Cleansing of the Congress plus Senate, led by famous opposition leader Porfirio Munoz Ledo & AMLO; or will it be just a resuscitation of the old PRI style government that has long been destroying the country and keeping the majority of Mexicans in poverty? Will he win the battle against corruption?
What is going to happen? Will the crooked military in the street be replaced by the honest police?
And how can the police break their centuries-old habit of corruption? How can the drug-dealer’s cartels be broken? It will take much time to know. As it is now, civil society’s role is to deflect attacks on Scions financing civil society; can these attacks at a presidential level, on NPPOS be restored to prominence? These are the questions.
Russia, as an authoritarian country is also comparatively analyzed, in comparison to Romania
Dr Olga’s Biography is the epitome of Civic Engagement, is the corollary of this enticing book.
The Conclusion is focusing on various levels of corruption in all 3 countries, and the prospects for a healthy civic polity, as the civic polity signs up to the new standards for transparency, inclusion, and equanimity.
The TEO legislation is laid out and the blueprint between U.S.-Mexico is working, and herein explained for other countries to follow.
The Romanian Minister of Finances, in 2015, has not approved this blueprint, because they are only interested in extracting money from the taxpayers, and a weak civic polity.

Civic Engagement Civil Society, and Philanthropy in the USA, Romania, And Mexico, is about anti-globalization movements: the bright and dark sides of globalization, interoperability of Blockchain and Clean Elections in the United States of America, Romania, and Mexico.
The Introduction to this book is about the role of civic society in Romania, and the United States, especially on how to placate dictators and dictatorships via civic engagement and the counterweight of civil society. The Romanian test case is explained – the new nomenclature imposing the nationalistic model by opposing civic engagement.
This theme is taken up by the author in the Biography, where agency and civic society are counteracting effectively the statist nationalism of PSD, a socialist popular party masquerading as a democratic party.
That does not continence investigation of government corruption by non-profit foundations.
Chapter six takes up Mexico as a case study, since 1985.
Pena Nieto, the Mexican outgoing President in 2018, has opposed investigations of his government’s corruption by independent Non-Profit organizations.
The need for transparency of expenditures is absolutely paramount in this type of operations by NPPOs (not-For -Private -Profit) organizations and Foundations.
The TEO legislation is laid out and the blueprint between U.S.-Mexico is working, and herein explained for other countries to follow.
The Romanian Minister of Finances, in 2015, has not approved this blueprint, because they are only interested in extracting money from the taxpayers, and a weak civic polity.
The communist mentality is still there entrenched in the minds of the technocrats, and bureaucrats; they are not interested in fostering civic engagement or civil society, to the contrary, Securitate officers are still running the show, together with incompetent and corrupt Congressman and parliamentarian PSD dominated (one party system, the communists regrouped in), AKA the Social Democrats Party, Securitate (ex-security, compromised officers, wiretapping tourists un necessarily.)

Is it going to be a government-funded elimination of corrupt Congressmen, and Cleansing of the Congress plus Senate, led by famous opposition leader Porfirio Munoz Ledo & AMLO?
or will it be just a resuscitation of the old PRI style government that has long been destroying the country and keeping the majority of Mexicans in poverty?
Will AMLO win the battle against corruption?

What is going to happen? Will the crooked military in the street be replaced by honest police? How does one test honesty in police agents, and Securitate agents? Blockchain software has the answers to that.

And how can the police break their centuries-old habit of corruption? How can the drug-dealers’ cartels be broken? It will take much time to know. As it is now, civil society’s role is to deflect attacks on Scions financing civil society; can these attacks at a presidential level, on NPPOS be exposed and penalized? These are the questions. Test cases in all countries are present in the book.

The Conclusion is focusing on various levels of corruption in all 3 countries, and the prospects for a healthy civic polity, as the civic polity signs up to the new standards for transparency, inclusion, and equanimity of the human spirit.
